The University of Akron
North Campus Parking Deck
The Project
The North Campus Parking Deck provides students with an additional 1,100 parking spaces at the university’s main campus. This facility opened in time for the start of the 2003 fall classes. The four-level parking deck consists of brick and cast stone in a post tension concrete construction. Offices for the parking services department are located within the parking deck. As a result of Welty’s cost saving techniques, a glass-enclosed pedestrian bridge was added to the architectural plans. Students are sheltered from the elements as they cross over Buchtel Avenue and head toward the heart of the campus. This concept coincides with the campus master plan to create easy access and connect students to other facilities such as the Student Union and the Recreation Center.
